High school students from Malaysia visited the School of Science

On 28th November 2018, ten students of Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Science Secondary School (Sekolah Menengah Sains Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah, SEMSAS) visited the School of Science. The students were hosted by Prof. Yaeko Mistumori of the Center for the Study of Higher Education and Global Admissions, Osaka University, who gave a talk presenting an overview of Osaka University and the admission procedure for the undergraduate programs. After an introduction of the School of Science by Assoc. Prof. Yon-Soo Tak of the Center for International Affairs, they visited laboratories in the Department of Macromolecular Science. The students were fascinated by the colourful polymer reaction demonstrated by Prof. Hiroyasu Yamaguchi of the Supramolecular Functional Chemistry Lab. At the Macromolecular Structure Lab (Prof. Katsumi Imada), they observed bacteria under the microscope and looked at the structure of a protein through 3D glasses. The students were impressed by the advanced facilities in the laboratories. Mr. Nik Abdul Malek Faisal Nik Salleh, a teacher of SEMSAS, appreciated that it was an excellent opportunity for the students to see and learn cutting-edge research activities at the School of Science, and felt that studying at Osaka University will surely help young students to broaden their horizon.
