Hello, I’m Erina from Indonesia, and I recently graduated from the SISC Ph.D. program Chemistry Department at the Graduate School of Science (GSS), Osaka University this September. Studying abroad has always been a dream of mine, and Japan, with its advanced research facilities, international collaboration, and rich culture, was a great place to fulfill it. Choosing Osaka University, one of the top universities in the country, turned out to lead me to a very rewarding academic journey.
I began my studies during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic in the autumn of 2021. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to enter Japan immediately and had to complete my first semester from home. However, I’m deeply grateful to my supervisor and the GSS, who provided online guidance and events that made me, and other international students, feel welcomed and included. Their support ensured we could continue making progress in our studies despite the distance.
My research focused on developing a new compound for targeted alpha therapy (TAT) using Astatine-211 as the alpha-emitter, a research area where Japan is at the forefront. Research is never easy, but being part of such a supportive and creative environment made a huge difference. With the professors gave freedom to explore students’ creative ideas, and lab members were always open to discussions, making the lab a welcoming and enriching space.
Throughout my time at Osaka University, I had the chance to use advanced instruments, present my research, and travel to various academic conferences in Japan and overseas. These experiences helped me grow as a researcher, build confidence in my work, and broaden my network through engaging with experts in the field.
Living in Japan as an international student also came with its own set of challenges, especially being away from home in a country with a different language and culture. However, Osaka University has a vibrant international community that made settling in easier. Programs like Science Buddy, along with international student gatherings, helped me connect with others who were on a similar journey, and I found great comfort in these friendships. I also met many Japanese students who were eager to interact with international peers, creating a truly inclusive environment.
If you’re considering pursuing your studies at Osaka University, do not hesitate. Prepare well and take the leap. It’s a deeply rewarding experience, both academically and personally, and I hope you’ll find it just as fulfilling as I did.
