Hello there, I am Chang-Lin Chen (Jason) from Taiwan,
a double degree program (DDP) Ph.D. student in
National Tsing-Hua University and Osaka University.
In this program, I have to study and execute collaborative research for at least 1 year in OU.
When I was master student, I participated in the NTHU-OU bilateral symposium to first know about OU. After visiting the campus and discussing science with professors and students here, I decided to apply for this program and study graduate school in OU.
In OU, I joined Prof. Ishihara’s Lab (Department of Biological Science) to study mitochondria biology in mammals. I am grateful to be supervised by Prof. Ishihara, he did a lot of support for my research and daily life in Japan, even though I cannot speak in Japanese very well. Members in this lab are nice to communicate and work with me in English. The research environment is suitable for highly-motivated student who is interested in cell biology, which allows me to push forward my study efficiently. In addition, there is a favorable relationship in the community of mitochondria field in Japan, researchers usually have workshops or seminars to exchange scientific ideas and make collaborations. These events also provide opportunities for students to meet famous scientists. After my study in OU, I will finish my thesis back in Taiwan and hopefully find postdoc position doing research in the US. During the time in Japan, I really enjoyed the views and food culture. There are various kinds of beautiful views in different seasons, such as sakura blossoms and autumn leaves. The ginkgo trees in the OU campus will turn yellow in autumn, which is also an unforgettable scene in my memories.
If you are interested in studying graduate school in Japan, Osaka University is an ideal candidate to pursue your degree. Not only the abundant resource but also the nice academic environment facilitates students to learn and interact with people here. I encourage students to learn Japanese to the level that you can communicate, it is important for taking part in academic events and experiencing the culture in Japan. Finally, I wish you do not be afraid to take challenges and to be honest with yourself.
